Ikuta Toma is going to be the protagonist in "Ningen Shikkau", a film (in the theaters from next year spring) based on the novel written by Dazai Osamu!
May 12th it was announced that actor Ikuta Toma (24) is coming up as protagonist in the movie "Ningen Shikkaku" (directed by Arato Kenjiro), in the theaters from nextyear spring. The movie is the first transposition on a movie of Showa period writer Dazai Osamu's masterpiece, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth. Ikuta Toma, at the first experience with a protagonist role in a movie, said "I want to dye myself into Dazai Osamu and "Ningen Shikkaku"'s world." He comes up on the silver screen with a literature masterpiece.
Ikuta Toma, starting from this winter monday drama on Fuji TV "Voice - Inochi naki mono no koe" and the now on air drama "Majo Saiban", always for Fuji TV, is getting continuous success this year on tv. He's been working at Johnny's Jimusho for over ten years, but he's now stepping the silver screens.
"Ningen Shikkaku" ["
No Longer Human" in the english translation], was published in 1948, the year he committed suicide, and it is considered a masterpiece between his works. It's a famous book as for youth literature, but so far there was no drama or movie transposition. Ikuta Toma says enthusiast that's an honour for him.
He gives a strong impression as a metropolitan and fresh guy, but he's going to interpretate a role new to him, the one of the protagonist of the novel, Ōba Yōzō, a man that becomes more and more weak to women and alcohol.
It's said that the novel is semi-autobiographical, and has many points in common with Dazai's life, that attempted a double love suicide with a woman. So, we can probably say this: Dazai equals Ōba equals Ikuta.
Ikuta willfully says: "I want to play delicately and respectfully the role of the protagonist that lives his life in a decadent way and in the end turns quite a invalid person."
